June - Benediction
medieval horror, duets, and film
Here are a few things bringing me delight this month.
New Literary Genre
I am not a spontaneous person. I like a plan, even a loose one, even when it comes to what I am going to read. I have been chipping away at Lonesome Dove and had a lot of driving to do in the last week so I found an interesting audiobook by Christopher Buehlman called, Between Two Fires. It is described as “medieval horror” and I’ve discovered that I kind of like it. It’s pretty gory and crass at times but the prose is well written and I plan on digging into Buehlman’s other work once this is finished.
Duets
I have been revisiting some artists I loved a decade ago and one of them is Margaret Glaspy. Glaspy released a new single from her forthcoming record called, Michigan, and there are a few lyrics in that song that I really love. Also, I discovered a sweet duet between her and Norah Jones singing the Wilco number, Jesus, Etc. and have fallen in love with that performance. Taylor Leonhardt released a wonderful duet with pal Jac Thompson a few weeks ago called Stevie Wonder from Leonhardt’s new EP, Hosanna that is wonderful as well.
New Photos
My old friend, Will Payne Harrison, came over to the house a few weeks ago with a large format film camera and took some photos of me. Film is such a beautiful medium and it’s a good reminder that beauty takes time and preparation.
